Living with Parkinson’s at home
Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world. In the UK it affects approximately 145,000 people. In fact, every hour, two more people are diagnosed – some 18,000 people every year.
It is a progressive neurological disease, resulting in the loss of nerve cells in the brain. This causes a lack of dopamine in the body – a chemical associated with movement, which then affects sufferers’ ability to move. We don’t know why people get the condition and currently there is no known cure. However, with proper care and support, it can be managed, and sufferers can enjoy a full and varied life.
Symptoms, which can be specific to each individual sufferer, can be split into motor and non-motor. Motor involves problems with movement, while non-motor can include pain, excessive sweating, depression and sometimes constipation. These can make living at home challenging, but the specialist Parkinson’s team at Nobilis Care works with clients and their families to create tailored and flexible care packages to addresses specific needs. This means we can help clients to enjoy life in the comfort and security of their own home.
In addition to the formal care we offer, our Parkinson’s team also helps with
- Maintaining physical exercise
- Diet advice
- Information about available therapies
Plus:
- Taking care of odd-jobs around the house
- Collecting and dropping of dry cleaning
- Preparing meals
- Pet care
- Going shopping
- Organising special occasions
Connected Care
Our smart technologies support the care we offer. From a family portal, to cameras and sensors, technology works hand-in-hand with our personal services.
We can provide a ‘virtual window’ into client homes so family members can check on their wellbeing remotely and be alerted to any issues.
Smart sensors monitor key areas and activities in the home, and signal alerts if they detect an unexpected change in behaviour, or something that might cause concern. At the same time, our carers are also there to act quickly, and provide support on the ground as needed. Here are just some examples of what we can install:
- Sensors (bed, motion, chair, electrical equipment)
- Cameras (front & back door/key rooms)
- In-home technology (Google home, family hub)
